iOS is an operating system developed by Apple Inc used on the mobile devices popularly referred to as iDevices. These include the iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, iPad Mini, iPad Air, Apple TV and Apple Watch.

Background
Apple's mobile operating system was initially known as 'iPhone OS'. It was first released in June 2007 when the first iPhone was unveiled. Since then there have been a series of releases and updates with the latest being iOS 8.

How iOS revolutionized mobile computing
1. Touch Interface
Initially the main way of interacting with computing devices was through physical keyboards. The few touch-based devices were clunky and poorly engineered. Apple's mobile operating system changed all that with its intuitive and easy to use interface.

2. Crowd-Sourced Apps
iOS opened the development of applications to outside developers and put in place a sustainable model of revenue sharing. This allowed for all kinds of applications catering for all kinds of needs to be developed.

3. Seamless Integration
iOS is tightly integrated with the rest of Apple products making it easy to start a task in one device and finish it off in another. This seamless integration also allows for fast and easy sharing of photos, music, videos and other files.
